The knee injury that forced Jannik Sinner to end his season early remains one of the central topics in the tennis world, and in recent hours, new details about how the Italian No. 1’s physical issue was handled—as recounted by Brad Gilbert during the “Big T” podcast—have further fueled the discussion.

The former American player and coach revealed behind-the-scenes information regarding Darren Cahill, a key figure in Sinner’s development and a long-standing member of his team. According to Gilbert, the Australian “supercoach” was only informed at the very last moment of Sinner’s withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters 1000, a tournament that was supposed to be one of the key events of the second half of the season.

“I’ve spoken with Darren often; it all started when he was on his way to the airport from Los Angeles to fly to Cincinnati. That’s when he received the call announcing Jannik’s withdrawal. From that moment on, he was essentially waiting for further developments,” Gilbert said.

According to Gilbert, the complexity of the situation is also confirmed by the number of specialists involved in the evaluations. Sinner reportedly consulted several doctors in an effort to find the best solution to permanently resolve the issue with his right knee and return to the court without risk.

The former U.S. coach then posed a question destined to fuel the debate in the coming weeks. The current plan is to follow a conservative approach based on therapy, rest, and specific muscle-strengthening exercises, avoiding surgery for now.

“But what would happen,” Gilbert wondered, “if the pain were to return during preparations for 2027? Imagine it’s December or early January, when the workload increases in preparation for the Australian Open, and the pain still hasn’t gone away. That’s a situation that could require difficult decisions.”

In the meantime, Sinner’s coaching staff’s plan remains unchanged. The goal is to allow the South Tyrolean champion to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of next season, with the Australian Open representing the major milestone on the horizon. But Darren Cahill’s silence on the whole matter is, paradoxically, starting to make quite a stir.
