Boris Becker lashes out at Jannik Sinner and Zverev: “That’s complete nonsense”

German tennis legend Boris Becker, in an interview on Andrea Petkovic’s podcast, once again shared his thoughts on the ATP rankings and Alexander Zverev’s rise to the top at the expense of Jannik Sinner.
In a few weeks, the German tennis player will become the new world No. 1, but many believe he isn’t truly the best in the world and has merely taken advantage of the absences of the Italian player and Carlos Alcaraz: “That’s complete nonsense,” Becker declared.
“He can only beat whoever stands in his way; it’s not his fault if others got injured or were eliminated,” the former world No. 1 said bluntly. “Zverev has won two Grand Slams this season, reached three consecutive finals, and was serving for the match in the Australian Open semifinal against Alcaraz. People need to finally give him the respect he deserves.”
A few days ago, Zverev himself spoke candidly about his impending No. 1 ranking: “The fact that I’ve claimed the top spot at the end of the year is due to Jannik Sinner’s absence—unfortunately, that’s just how it is. It will certainly be a special moment for me, but I think the emotions will really hit when I actually see the number 1 next to my name. Right now, I’m still number 2.”
“I know many people think it’s good for me that he’s not on the tour. But I don’t see it that way—quite the opposite. I’m not that kind of person: I like to compete against the best in the world, and even though Jannik has beaten me many times this year, I’d like him to be on the tour with me.”
