Alexander Zverev bids farewell to the Shanghai Masters 1000 in the semifinals. The German was defeated in a comeback by Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the tournament’s No. 25 seed, who won with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. In the final of the Chinese tournament, scheduled for Sunday, the Spaniard will face Jodar, who eliminated Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal.

The loss in Shanghai forces Zverev to postpone his bid for the top spot in the world rankings once again. In fact, the German will not be able to overtake Jannik Sinner even if he wins the upcoming Vienna tournament, which begins on October 26.

The Italian champion will therefore remain at the top of the ATP rankings at least until November 2, when the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 begins. This result guarantees Sinner more time at the top of the world rankings, while Zverev will have to wait for new opportunities to try to overtake him.
