Thomas Johansson looks up to Jannik Sinner and makes no secret of the fact that coaching the world No. 1 would be a career dream. At the same time, however, the former Swedish tennis player hopes that Sinner will continue working with Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, the coaching duo that has guided him to the top of the world tennis rankings.

Johansson’s comments come at a delicate moment for the future of Sinner’s coaching staff, with questions about whether Cahill will remain through the 2027 season at the center of discussions. The Australian “supercoach” and Vagnozzi are two key figures in the South Tyrolean’s development, having helped him establish himself at the highest levels through a comprehensive approach that encompasses technical, tactical, and mental aspects.

The former Swedish champion also emphasized just how difficult it is to face Sinner as an opponent. “Sometimes you find yourself hoping he’s having an off day when you play against him,” he said in an exclusive interview with Ubitennis, highlighting the level the Italian has reached and the pressure he’s able to put on his opponents.

Johansson knows the international circuit well, both from his playing career and his experience as a coach. In 2002, he won the Australian Open, becoming the seventh Swedish tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title, and reached No. 7 in the ATP rankings. After retiring, he worked with several top tennis players, including Caroline Wozniacki and Daniil Medvedev. Johansson spoke highly of his experience with the Russian, summing it up in a few words: “It was a pleasure to have worked with Medvedev.”

In this context, Johansson’s message is clear: coaching Sinner would be an extraordinary opportunity, but continuing with his current coaching staff remains a desirable prospect. For the world No. 1, after a season cut short to recover from a right knee injury, the priority is to prepare as best as possible for his return to the court and lay the groundwork for his continued growth.
