Jannik Sinner: Will This Be His Last Week as No. 1? The Math Behind the Potential Overtake

Jannik Sinner has remained at the top of the ATP rankings for the 95th week, but Alexander Zverev is closing in on him. The German is competing in the ATP 500 in Vienna and could claim the top spot in the world rankings for the first time in his career as early as November 2, provided he reaches at least the quarterfinals of the Austrian tournament.

Zverev, this year’s champion at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, has already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking. He will thus become the second German to achieve this milestone after Boris Becker, who did so in 1991, and the 30th player in history to finish a year at the top of the ATP rankings.

There was only one change in the Top 10. Arthur Fils moved up two spots thanks to his semifinal appearance in Brussels, climbing to No. 8 and setting a new career-high ranking.

Italy retained eight players in the world’s top 100. Behind Sinner, Flavio Cobolli remained steady at No. 6, Luciano Darderi at No. 23, and Lorenzo Musetti at No. 26.

The Tuscan tennis player earned 250 points thanks to his title win in Lyon—his first in four years—but was unable to improve his ranking. In fact, the 180 points he earned in last season’s Vienna semifinals—which are no longer counted—had an impact on his total.

Among the Italians in the Top 100, the only one to move up from the previous week was Mattia Bellucci, who climbed to No. 66, moving up two spots.
