Lazio coach Gennaro Gattuso will be without Mattia Zaccagni for this weekend’s match against Napoli. The Biancocelesti forward will be sidelined until after the international break due to a muscle injury, the extent of which was revealed during recent medical tests.

“S.S. Lazio announces that player Mattia Zaccagni underwent diagnostic tests today following the injury he sustained during the league match against Cagliari. The tests revealed a strain of the left quadriceps femoris. The player has already begun a rehabilitation program, will be monitored daily, and will undergo further evaluation with new tests in the coming days,” reads the statement from the Rome-based club.

The attacking winger, who was forced to leave the field early during the match against Cagliari, will not return until after the break and is also doubtful for the match against Lecce on November 21. Zaccagni played in all ten of the league’s opening matches under Gattuso, scoring two goals and providing five decisive assists. He is one of the key players on the team currently leading the Serie A standings.

The match against Cagliari was a particularly painful day for the Biancocelesti captain: before kickoff, Zaccagni lost his maternal uncle, Emanuele Morri, to whom he had dedicated a jersey in the days leading up to the game. On social media, he remembered him with a touching message: “You taught me what it means to fight.”
