Chaos in Naples: Allegri and Hojlund Exchange Barbs: “I Disagree”

The mood is somber at Napoli following their crushing 4-1 defeat against Porto in the Champions League. After the match, statements were made that highlighted a certain disconnect between coach Massimiliano Allegri’s analysis and that of some of the Azzurri players. The coach defended the team’s performance—at least for 70 minutes—but the comments from Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay painted a less reassuring picture of the locker room.
Allegri attributed the result primarily to specific incidents and a physical decline in the final stretch. “We played a good game for 70 minutes,” the coach said, highlighting the mistakes made on set pieces and the difficulties caused by numerous absences. He also pointed out that Napoli entered the final stages of the match with few substitutes available on the bench. “I have nothing to reproach the players for tonight, in terms of their dedication and desire,” he added, assuring that he intends to work to turn the season around.
This assessment did not convince Hojlund. The Danish forward openly distanced himself from his coach’s remarks, making no secret of his disappointment over yet another negative result. “I disagree. We didn’t play well; we need to score more and stop losing games, because there have been way too many of them now,” he told Prime Video. He then broadened the discussion, calling out the club’s leadership as well: “We all need to take a good look in the mirror—not just the coach and the players, but the club, too. We all need to take responsibility.”
No less significant was the outburst from Scott McTominay, who scored Napoli’s only goal at the Dragão that evening. Despite the goal, the Scottish midfielder couldn’t hide his anger over the loss: “I’m too angry; I can’t put it into words.” A sentiment that captures the difficult period the Azzurri are going through.
Matteo Politano rounded out the picture, expressing his disappointment with some teammates’ reluctance to face the cameras. “It would be nice if some of the other teammates came here to offer explanations—it shouldn’t always be us Italians,” he said. The winger then criticized the team’s attitude: “A team like ours can’t have this attitude at this level.”
