Milan’s Embarrassing Performance; Amorim Harsher Than Ever: “You Can’t Show Up Like That”

Milan’s humiliating home loss to Ferencvaros in the Europa League sent Ruben Amorim into a rage; in his postgame comments, he struggled to explain this setback for the Rossoneri, who were coming off a strong derby win against Inter.

The Rossoneri seemed almost helpless against the Hungarians: “There’s no explanation; I can’t say much—I don’t remember another first half like this. It’s about ambition, concentration, ambition. We gave away chances; we made stupid mistakes. We weren’t ready to play soccer tonight, and it’s hard to explain.”

“We simply weren’t ready to switch gears from the derby to this other competition. When you wear the Milan jersey, you have a responsibility, and you can’t show up like this. A mental issue? We’re not ready to be competitive on two fronts. We need to work on our approach to the game and how we tackle matches. There are no excuses tonight; there’s nothing I can say.”

“I usually defend the team, but not tonight. Maybe I did something wrong these past two days, but not mentally. This team had similar problems last year as well. We need to find a solution. Tonight we weren’t ready; we weren’t brave enough. If we don’t win, we have to do everything we can to turn it around, and we didn’t see that. Everyone needs to train like Pavlovic. He’s ready to give his all in practice. He’s a good example. Sometimes when players don’t start from the beginning, they have difficulties.”

Our situation in the Europa League risks being compromised soon: “We must and can win games despite the rotations. We have to be ready—and right now we’re not—to play and win every three days. But I won’t give up on this competition. As long as we’re not mathematically eliminated, we’ll fight in this competition just as we do in the others.”
