Former Milan and Juventus coach Fabio Capello in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport spoke about the future technical commissioner of the Italian national team, which will be decided after the election of the new FIGC president. Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the season and many dream of his arrival in Azzurro, but Don Fabio is skeptical.

“He is a great coach with great quality, he always manages to do very well everywhere at club level. But the national team is another job, you don’t work every day and that’s the difficulty: you are not a coach, you are a selector. You have to be good at finding the right players who can really, when they wear the Azzurri jersey, play like they do in the clubs, because that’s the problem.”

“We’re talking about a great coach, who is used to an optic where if he needs two midfielders, they buy them. Here you can’t find them, that’s the difference, the team has to improve in a different way. But that he is a great coach is told by the results, everything he has achieved. Then he is an intelligent person: it’s okay that he can figure out right away how to do it. My preference is for Italy to move forward, to be Italy again.”

According to Capello, the right man is Antonio Conte: “He has already coached the national team, he went through the 2016 European Championship with good results, so it would be the return of someone who knows the house, who knows what needs to be given to the players and what they can give him. He is prepared and determined, he has that drive and that grit that he can transmit to the players, right now maybe the Azzurri team really needs such a motivator. He has a particular character, however, I look at the results, which prove him right.”
