Roma and Como in Champions, Milan and Juve not. Lecce safe, Cremonese in B

The 38th and final day of Serie A completely turns Milan’s season finale upside down, turning what until a few weeks ago looked like a relatively quiet qualification to the next Champions League into a resounding failure. In fact, the Rossoneri collapsed by surprise against Cagliari and, accomplice to the simultaneous victories of their direct competitors, plummeted from third to sixth place in the standings, saying goodbye to the Europe that counts.
At San Siro, Milan started well and even found the lead, giving the impression that they could manage the match without any particular difficulty. As the minutes passed, however, the team lost compactness and intensity, allowing Cagliari to gradually get back into the game. The Sardinians took advantage of this with great character: in the 20th minute came the equalizer signed by Borrelli, good at taking advantage of a defensive inattention and beating the Rossoneri goalkeeper. In the second half Milan tried to react, but continued to concede space and in the 58th minute was hit again, this time by Rodriguez, who completed the comeback and signed the final 2-1.
The triple whistle thus sanctioned one of the heaviest disappointments of the Milan season. The defeat, in fact, costs dearly: Milan not only loses its place among the top four, but even slips to sixth place, being overtaken by Roma and Como, both victorious on the last day.
Roma closes the championship in the best way by beating Verona 2-0 thanks to a solid and concrete performance. The Giallorossi thus won three crucial points that allowed them to hook the Champions zone right at the last corner of the championship, completing an extraordinary comeback in the final weeks.
Still more surprising was the result of Como, the true revelation of the season. The team led by Cesc Fabregas overwhelmed Cremonese with a clear 4-1 victory in front of their own public, clinching a historic European qualification and crowning a year well beyond all expectations. For Cremonese, however, the heavy defeat means relegation to Serie B.
Benefiting from the last day’s results is also Lecce, which manages to save itself and keep its category. The Salentini can thus celebrate a stay in Serie A won with hard work and determination until the last minute of the season.
