L'Aquila Trento has chosen the new coach: there's the official statement of the club
Aquila Trento has chosen its new coach. Having said goodbye to Massimiliano Cancellieri, the club has decided to rely on Alessandro Rossi, European champion with the National Under-20 team. Born in 1983, during his career he also coached in Rieti and Scafati. Last year he was exonerated in Treviso.
This is the club’s official statement: “Dolomiti Energia Trentino announces that it has entrusted the role of head coach of the first team to Alessandro Rossi. Aquila Basket Trento has signed a two-year agreement with the Italian coach, reigning European champion with the Under-20 national team. Coach Rossi is ready to put enthusiasm, preparation and ability to work with young people at the service of the bianconero project.
Born in Naples on August 22, 1983, Rossi began his coaching career in the youth sector of Napoli Basket at the age of 22, remaining with the Neapolitan club until 2012. In 2013 he landed in Rieti as an assistant coach in the National B Series, winning promotion to A2 already the following season.
In 2017 he became head coach of Rieti: in his first year he came close to making the playoffs, while in the following season he finished fifth in the regular season, hitting the playoffs and overcoming Forlì in the first round before surrendering to Treviso, then promoted to the LBA. In the following championship, interrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Rieti still occupied fifth place with a record of 14 wins and 11 losses.
In 2021-22 he was chosen by Givova Scafati, with whom he immediately won promotion to the LBA. That season he set the record for most wins in the club’s history and finished without home losses between regular season and playoffs at PalaMangano. The following year he thus made his debut as head coach in Serie A.
In the summer of 2023 he joined the technical staff of the Italian Under-20 national team as assistant coach to Alessandro Magro at the European Championships in Heraklion. He then returned to Rieti, leading the team to third place in the Green round in the 2023-24 season and reaching the playoff semifinals, lost to Fortitudo Bologna. In the following championship, played under the new one-round format, he again led Rieti to the top of the standings with a fourth-place finish and another playoff semifinal, this time lost to Pallacanestro Cantù. At the end of two excellent seasons in Rieti, Rossi won the European Under 20 title in the summer with the Italian national team together also with Theo Airhienbuwa, being then reappointed to lead the Azzurrini again next summer.
Last season he also led Nutribullet Treviso Basket for 13 games before being exonerated. With his enthusiasm and preparation, Alessandro Rossi is ready to begin a new challenging adventure at the helm of Dolomiti Energia Trentino.”
