Marios Oikonomou, did not make it: he died at the age of 33. Nine days after a serious car accident near the “Chatzikosta” hospital, the man lost the difficult battle he was fighting to stay alive. The former AEK, Bologna and Greek national team player, despite the efforts of doctors, was unable to recover due to ischemic brain damage that was found to be irreversible.

“Today the PAS Giannina family is in mourning. Marios Oikonomou, a boy who had won the love and respect of all of us, left us too soon. We shared moments of joy, sacrifice and battle. Always with a smile, always with goodness. To his loved ones, our president and father Giorgos Oikonomou and his family, we express our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences. His memory will remain alive in all of us. Marios, we will remember you fondly. May your memory be eternal,” his first club wrote in a note.

Marios Oikonomou had started his football career in PAS Giannina, and then played in important Greek and European clubs such as Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari, AEK, Copenaghen, Sampdoria and Panetolikos. By 2024 he had retired from playing soccer. He had made six appearances with the Greek national team and also won the Danish championship with Copenhagen in 2022.
