CT Italia, Paolo Maldini, and Leonardo Spill the Beans on Pep Guardiola

Until a few months ago, it seemed like a pipe dream; today, it could become a reality: there’s a real possibility of seeing Pep Guardiola on the Italian national team’s bench. The Catalan coach, currently without a team following his departure from Manchester City, is a top-tier talent and could help bring many people back to the national team.

The main obstacle is financial: it appears that Guardiola has asked Giovanni Malagò for 20 million euros, roughly double what the Federation has offered. Talks are ongoing, as evidenced by the comments from Leonardo and Paolo Maldini.

During Thursday’s FIGC press conference, Maldini stated: “Ideally, we’d like to finalize this by the end of the week, but perhaps it would be even better to wait for the person we want. The timeline is dictated by the opportunity to secure the candidates we want. There’s a sense of urgency, but deep down, we’re not in such a rush.”

“We, too, want to move as quickly as possible,” added Leonardo, “but this process is essential for defining what we want. Waiting a few days is the right thing to do, even though we have a clear vision in many cases. People always talk about Plan A, B, and C. In our minds, it’s clear.”

“I’m very happy to be here; my candidacy began with the Serie A League,” said Malagò. “An almost unanimous consensus that led me to overcome my own reservations. My predecessor chose to take sole responsibility for selecting the head coach; I’ve turned the tables and brought Paolo and Leonardo on board.”

“I know the choice that interests everyone most is that of the head coach, but there are also other roles to fill. I’ll have their full support. The goal we’ve set for ourselves is a six-year period, leading up to the 2032 European Championship, during which we must close this glaring gap that’s plain for all to see.”
