Cagliari Transfer Market: A Surprise Move for Sebastiano Esposito
Cagliari continues to make decisive moves in the transfer market, both in terms of signings and departures. Among the hottest topics remains the situation involving Sebastiano Esposito, who is set to leave the Rossoblù before the summer transfer window closes. There is no shortage of interest in the forward. In addition to Atalanta—which would allow him to play under Maurizio Sarri—Hull City, an English club, has also stepped forward in recent hours, intent on seriously exploring the possibility of bringing him to the Championship.
The list of suitors, however, is longer. Anderlecht, Sampdoria, and Empoli have also been tracking the former Inter player for some time, while in Serie A, both Napoli—which may need to replace Lorenzo Lucca if he is sold—and Bologna—which is looking to bolster its attack—have inquired about him. With so many suitors in the running, Esposito’s future could be decided in the coming weeks, while Cagliari evaluates the best solution for the player and for its own finances.
Complicating the situation even further is the now-obvious rift between the player and the club. Everything came to a head on the eve of Cagliari’s departure for Germany, where the team was scheduled to play a friendly against Union Berlin: the Rossoblù club issued an official statement saying that Esposito “left the first team’s training camp in Ponte di Legno without authorization,” specifying that the club “will assess what happened and reserves the right to take appropriate action.” This was a very harsh stance, to which the player’s agent, Mario Giuffredi, responded immediately: “Cagliari’s statement is a complete fabrication! Yesterday I was on the phone from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. with sporting director Accardi and head coach Pisacane, and—with the player himself present—we agreed on a few days’ absence due to a period of intense stress the young man was going through. We agreed that he would return on August 5 after the friendly match in Germany.” This version of events is diametrically opposed to the club’s, which has effectively made any reconciliation impossible.
In this scenario, Atalanta appears to be in pole position to secure the striker’s contract. The Bergamo-based club considers Esposito an ideal fit for Sarri’s needs—Sarri has long been a great admirer of the 2002-born player—and is reportedly planning new talks with Cagliari in the coming hours. The Sardinian club, for its part, values the player at around 20 million euros.
