Antognoni is furious with Fiorentina: “Either they’re making fun of me or they think I’m an idiot”

It was meant to be a conciliatory gesture, but it ended up further widening the rift between Fiorentina and Giancarlo Antognoni. President Giuseppe Commisso’s invitation to the legendary Viola captain to participate in the club’s centennial celebrations on August 29—accompanied by the announcement that the No. 10 jersey would be symbolically retired for one season—was not well received by the former playmaker.

Speaking in Arcola during the Coriolano Award ceremony, Antognoni responded with very harsh words toward the current ownership: “I left Fiorentina because of problems with the ownership. Five years later, I read a press release mentioning the retirement of my jersey. Either they’re making fun of me or they think I’m a fool. I’m always willing to help, but I won’t accept situations like this. Five years ago, I promised myself I wouldn’t be involved. The ownership is still the same, and I’m not changing my mind. That statement from the president really infuriated me.”

These words confirm that relations between Antognoni and the Viola management are still far from reconciliation, despite the club’s attempt to involve one of its most beloved legends in the celebrations marking its 100-year history.

During the event, the former No. 10 also reflected on the deep bond that ties him to Florence, the city where he built much of his career and his life. “When I was 18, Fiorentina came calling, and it was the best decision of my life. I met Liedholm, who later wanted me at Roma at all costs. But I fell in love with Florence and its people, who still show me incredible affection today for having always stayed. I have few titles to my name, but Florence is my Scudetto,” he said.
