Jonathan David secures the derby win for Atlético; José Mourinho’s Real Madrid suffers another loss

A major upset for Atlético Madrid, which won the Madrid derby and defeated Real at the Metropolitano. José Mourinho’s team was beaten 2-1 in a match decided entirely in the second half, following a balanced first half that lacked any real excitement.

The turning point came in the 50th minute: Giuliano Simeone drew a penalty and, in the process, got Huijsen sent off, leaving Real a man down. From the spot, Grimaldo kept his cool and didn’t miss, putting the Colchoneros ahead. Atlético immediately capitalized on their numerical advantage, and Simeone Jr. took center stage again shortly afterward, delivering a perfect pass to Jonathan David. The former Juventus player, from just a few steps out, couldn’t miss and made it 2-0, scoring his third consecutive goal in an Atlético Madrid jersey.

In the closing minutes, however, Diego Simeone’s team slowed the pace too much and gave Real Madrid a chance to get back into the game. The visitors cut the deficit thanks to Rudiger, who skillfully headed home the goal off a free kick. Real’s response, however, came too late. Atlético Madrid claimed victory in the derby, moved ahead of Mourinho’s team in the standings, and set their sights on chasing Barcelona.
