Jannik Sinner and Filippo Volandri Speak Their Minds Without Mincing Words

Jannik Sinner’s condition and his recovery from the injury that prevented him from competing in the U.S. Open continue to be a hot topic ahead of the season’s final events: Filippo Volandri, a guest on “Tennis Talk” on SuperTennis, provided an update on the situation, also looking ahead to the final stage of the 2026 Davis Cup.
The Italian captain provided encouraging updates on the world No. 1, who has been sidelined for nearly fifty days but has already returned to training with his staff. According to Volandri, his recovery is proceeding according to schedule and without rushing things: “Jannik has been training for about ten days and is increasing his workload day by day.”
The goal is not only to fully recover from the injury but also to bring his physical condition back to the levels required for top-level competitive play. “The forced break has required us to proceed in stages,” explained Volandri. “He is now in a crucial phase for ensuring a safe return.”
The news coming from the South Tyrolean champion’s entourage—with whom Volandri himself said he has spoken—is positive, however: “From what I’ve heard, he’s training and doing well; he wants to be as super competitive as we’ve come to expect from him. He did the same after the hiatus due to the Clostebol incident—another long, unplanned break—exceeding even his own expectations.” In short, Volandri has no particular doubts about Sinner’s ability to immediately regain his form once his recovery is complete.
““I’m certain that when he returns, he’ll be competitive right away, at the level of the final he won in London against Zverev,” added the non-playing captain of the Italian Davis Cup team, who—speaking specifically about the national team tournament—made no secret of his ambition to see the champion from Sesto Pusteria back in the blue jersey, following his absence in 2025 due to a schedule agreed upon with his staff and accepted without controversy by the Federation.
The world No. 1 has never hidden his attachment to the competition and to Italy, even though any decision regarding his potential participation remains contingent on his physical condition. Volandri himself urged caution: “I start talking with the guys in August or September and onward. For Jannik, the priority is to get back to 100 percent: first he’ll have to get there, then we can talk about the rest.”
