Roberto De Zerbi has not been fired, but…he’s losing his job

Tottenham’s season got off to a terrible start: the club, coming off a very difficult season, tried to meet all of Roberto De Zerbi’s demands this summer and invested over 350 million euros to sign stars like Savinho, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, and others. Evidently, that wasn’t enough.

In the first five Premier League matchdays, the Spurs have managed just two points—the same total as Fulham, which, however, has scored more than twice as many goals as Marmoush and his teammates. The terrible start to the season cost Roberto De Zerbi his job. No firing (for now): sponsor Sidiz, the supplier of the benches at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has decided to terminate its contract with the English club early. This was reported by The Telegraph and picked up by Sportmediaset.

Tension at Spurs is running extremely high, as evidenced by De Zerbi’s outburst against Mathys Tel at the end of the match against Everton. The former Sassuolo manager rushed onto the field at the final whistle to reprimand his player: “I went straight to him because I was frustrated. I sent him in with very clear instructions: run, draw the defenders out, attack the spaces, and create options for your teammates. But when he came on, I didn’t see any of that,” he later said at a press conference.

“I told him straight up: ‘You can’t come into a game like this and just disappear. I need you to move. I need you to make the defenders think.’ We were desperately looking for a goal, and I needed energy, movement, and aggression from him.”

The London club’s management, especially given the massive investment in the summer transfer market, is far from happy with the team’s results, and the upcoming matches will be crucial for the future of Roberto De Zerbi, who, incidentally, has already been “written off” by many fans.

Tottenham will take the field on October 10 for an away match against Manchester United, then face Coventry City, followed by Chelsea. The big matches against the Red Devils and the Blues will be extremely difficult, but De Zerbi can’t afford any more mistakes.
