Sofia Goggia: Two Viral Infections Behind Her Illness—Test Results Provide Clarity

Important updates have emerged regarding Sofia Goggia’s condition following her early return from Argentina, which had caused concern within the Italian ski community. The Italian Winter Sports Federation has announced, via an official statement released on Friday, the results of the medical tests the champion from Bergamo underwent in recent days.

“Sofia Goggia has completed a series of in-depth clinical tests at the La Madonnina Clinic and the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan —the statement reads—which revealed two distinct viral infections that, when combined, had an even more severe physical impact, causing the athlete to become severely debilitated. Goggia has already begun her recovery program in recent days, developed in collaboration with the FISI Medical Commission chaired by Dr. Andrea Panzeri.”

Sofia Goggia had cut short her training in Ushuaia earlier than planned due to an illness she contracted during her stay in South America. The skier was supposed to continue training on the snow until mid-September and then travel to Chile, but in agreement with the FISI Medical Commission, she decided to return to Italy to have the situation evaluated further.

Given the latest developments, the countdown to the 2026–2027 winter season can finally begin: the first event is scheduled for October 24 in Sölden, Austria, with the giant slalom kicking off the season. Beaver Creek, in the United States, will host the season’s first speed events: the first two downhill races will take place on December 11 and 12, while the season’s first Super-G will be held on December 13.
