Silvio Berlusconi still causes arguments even after his death

Malpensa Airport has officially changed its name to “Milan-Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi Airport.” The naming in honor of the former prime minister, who passed away in June 2023, was met with emotion and pride by his family and supporters. The reaction was different among those who did not hold him in high regard during his lifetime: social media was flooded with posts from representatives of various factions.

Numerous dignitaries attended Friday’s ceremony, including Senate President Ignazio La Russa, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Matteo Salvini, Lombardy Region President Attilio Fontana, ENAC Special Commissioner Carlo Mearelli, and SEA President Michaela Castelli, as well as representatives of the Berlusconi family.

Silvio Berlusconi was one of the most successful club presidents in soccer history, with his name primarily associated with the achievements of AC Milan—which he led from 1986 to 2017—and, in recent years, with Monza’s historic promotion. During his 31 years at the helm, the Rossoneri won 29 official trophies. In domestic competitions, they won 8 Serie A titles, 1 Coppa Italia, and 7 Italian Super Cups. Internationally, it has won 5 UEFA Champions Leagues, 5 UEFA Super Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. During his presidency, the team was led by coaches such as Arrigo Sacchi, Fabio Capello, and Carlo Ancelotti, fielding several Ballon d’Or winners, including Marco van Basten, Andriy Shevchenko, and Kaká.

In 2018, Berlusconi acquired Monza, then in Serie C. Under his ownership, the club earned promotion to Serie B and, in 2022, its first-ever promotion to Serie A, subsequently securing early survival in its debut season in the top flight.
