The former tennis player is ruthless: “Jannik Sinner is one of the few who comes out on top”

Sergiy Stakhovsky, a former Ukrainian tennis player who reached a career-high world No. 30 during the “Big Three” era, spoke in an interview with Spazio Tennis about the current generation of tennis players—and not in very positive terms.

““I wouldn’t say the level of tennis has dropped. I’d say, rather, that it has perhaps improved slightly. But the difference lies in commitment—or rather, the lack thereof. With very few exceptions, the new generation doesn’t have a true commitment to tennis,” is Stakhovsky’s scathing assessment.

“When Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal were playing, they were all completely dedicated to the sport. They wanted to be the best and win as much as possible. The other players in the top 10 had to give more than 100% because when those four (including Murray—ed.) made a mistake, you had to take advantage of it. Today, mistakes happen every week. Alexander Zverev has won two Grand Slam titles, but how many top-10 players did he beat to do so? Maybe one…”.

Among the few who stand out, according to Stakhovsky, is Jannik Sinner: “In my opinion, he’s one of the very few players who are truly determined—determined to become the best and to win as much as possible. You can see it. I’m really curious to see how his career will unfold. He and Alcaraz have a rhythm and speed of play that no one else has.”
