Tragedy on the roads of the Val di Magra, in Liguria. On the morning of Sunday, October 4, shortly before 10 a.m., a 55-year-old cyclist from Castelfiorentino suffered a sudden and severe medical emergency while riding with a group of friends along the hilly roads of Ortonovo Paese.

The alarm was raised immediately, and volunteers from the Luni Public Assistance Service and the Delta 2 unit of the 118 emergency service, based at San Bartolomeo Hospital in Sarzana, responded to the scene. Despite resuscitation attempts and the efforts of the medical staff, there was nothing that could be done for the 55-year-old. Rescuers were ultimately forced to declare him dead.

A tragic incident on an important day for Italian cycling: the Coppa Agostoni is taking place today, a race that has once again attracted top-tier riders this year and boasts a highly respected list of past winners.

The competition, now in its 79th edition, started as usual from the center of Lissone and then got into full swing in the Brianza hills, with four laps of the circuit featuring the climbs of Sirtori, Colle Brianza, and Lissolo. The course concludes after approximately 35 km of mostly flat terrain back toward Lissone, a finish that leaves room for various tactical approaches to the race.

The history of the Coppa Agostoni dates back to October 1946. Over the decades, the competition has gradually increased in prestige, eventually achieving international status thanks to the participation of riders from World Tour teams. One of the most significant editions remains that of 1987, when the race was chosen as the sole event to determine the Italian Road Championship, won by Bruno Leali. The list of winners includes champions of the caliber of Gimondi, Merckx, De Vlaeminck, Moser, Saronni, Fondriest, Bugno, Ullrich, Jalabert, and Pozzato, among others.

In today’s edition, the most anticipated riders include Jhonatan Narváez, Adam Yates, Quinn Simmons, Brandon McNulty, and Benoît Cosnefroy. Yates, in particular, returns as the defending champion after winning last year with a solo breakaway on this very same course. UAE-XRG appears to be the team with the most cards to play, boasting a star-studded lineup consisting of Yates himself, Narváez, McNulty, Großschartner, and Cosnefroy.
