Naomi Schiff, a former driver and Sky commentator, sounded the alarm for Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes regarding the rest of the season after yet another problem with George Russell’s power unit in Malaysia. According to Schiff, the ongoing engine troubles could jeopardize Antonelli’s future victories and even his title run, despite his commanding lead in the standings.

“It’s not a good thing for this to be happening. It’s already happened several times, not just with George’s car. Kimi has also had some issues, and other cars with Mercedes power units have had problems as well. So, I think there’s a broader issue that’s worrying Toto Wolff. We’ve seen him looking very frustrated lately.”

“We have to ask ourselves why they’re experiencing so many reliability issues in general. This could cost Kimi more wins. It could cost the team a lot of points in the constructors’ championship… Think about Red Bull this weekend, but other teams and drivers will also take points away from Mercedes.”

“You can understand why there’s general frustration, and I feel bad for George. But I don’t want to let him off the hook because his job is to be faster than his teammate. This year was supposed to be his year; Mercedes finally had a competitive car for him, and I think he made a few mistakes.”
