In the Aurina Valley, autumn has a different rhythm

In the Valle Aurina vacation area, which includes the municipalities of Campo Tures, Valle Aurina, Predoi, and Selva dei Molini, autumn follows a different rhythm. Surrounded by more than eighty peaks exceeding three thousand meters, the region offers an atmosphere that seems suspended in time during this season. Before the winter frosts set in, the days invite you to take your time—whether strolling through larch forests tinged with gold and warm hues, stopping at mountain huts, or enjoying outdoor excursions with the whole family. The landscape changes color week by week, while the crisp, clear air fills with the scent of resin and damp earth, providing the perfect setting for exploring the valley on foot.
The Sentieri del Sole trails, stretching along the south-facing slope, offer flat stretches alternating with short climbs through woods and meadows, where you’ll encounter the area’s historic farmsteads, with their ancient wooden beams that tell the story of centuries of Alpine life. These trails also hold stories from days gone by: in the past, some mountain paths were used by smugglers. Today, they invite you to discover the valley by following the traces of its past. Even those traveling with children will find suitable trails to explore. From Campo Tures, the trail climbs along the stream to the three tiers of the Riva Waterfalls, where the roaring sound of the water intertwines with the silence of the forest. A light mist creates magical plays of light among the trees, and you can extend the route to Castel Taufers, which stands majestically guarding the valley. Continuing inland to Predoi, you can tour the former copper mine aboard a small mining train that enters the underground tunnels directly—an ideal stop to round out the day. The art of bobbin lace is also linked to the mine’s history. After mining operations ceased, this craft offered new employment opportunities to the families of Predoi and became a tradition of artisanal craftsmanship that is still practiced today. In Selva dei Molini, on the other hand, the trails winding through the old water mills offer a glimpse into the rural life of days gone by.
With the arrival of fall, the herds leave the high pastures to return to the barns in the villages down in the valley. This transhumance, known locally as Kiehkemma, is one of the most cherished events for the local population and a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the authentic spirit of the region. On October 17 and 18, 2026, Riva di Tures will host its traditional Autumn Festival, featuring a parade of animals festively adorned with flower wreaths, live music, and food stands showcasing local culinary specialties. Among the season’s signature products, Graukäse stands out—the characteristic cheese of the Aurina Valley, now protected by Slow Food, served in restaurants and lodging facilities alongside traditional South Tyrolean dishes.
