Lukaku case: tough stance by Gianni Infantino
The FIFA president expressed his sympathy for the Inter Milan spearhead
Romelu Lukaku’s racist insults and jubilation during the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg between Juventus and Inter Milan predictably resonated abroad.
Among the many expressions of support for the Nerazzurri spearhead is that of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who through a letter took a clear position on the issue: “In soccer there is no place for racism or any form of discrimination. It is unacceptable to see the racist insults directed by spectators at Romelu Lukaku during the Coppa Italia match between Juventus and Inter Milan. FIFA and myself stand by Romelu and all those who have suffered from racism. The victims of this abuse must be supported and those responsible must be punished severely by all authorities.”
“I repeat the call I made earlier du this year for fans to speak out and silence the racists. Similarly, in soccer, we need to apply stricter sports sanctions to deal with such incidents and send a clear message. Once and for all: No to racism and any form of discrimination,” these are the words of the FIFA president.
