After three hours of play, Musetti could not find the final breakthrough

.

A real shame. Musetti lost the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Umag. After reaching the final with great determination, the Italian, No. 2 in the men's draw, surrendered to Cerundolo, No. 37 in the international rankings, in three sets: 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) the partials in favor of the Argentine, who was good at fighting back after a first set dominated by Musetti.

For the Italian a missed opportunity to win what would have been his third career ATP title. In the deciding tie-break, the Carrara native could not find the leap to knock out Cerundolo who, after eliminating Rublev, also took the satisfaction of beating the Italian, one of the most in-form tennis players of the moment. For the Argentine, third career title.

For Musetti it is the second final lost in this 2024, after the knockout in the last act of the Queen's tournament (against Paul). The Carrara native has not won a tournament since Naples 2022 (October). Either way, as of Monday, he will be No. 16 in the world, just one position away from his career best ranking.

Now Musetti will wantà to Paris to participate in the Olympics. After Sinner’s forfeit, è he will be the spearhead of Italian tennis at the five-ring event. The hope è that the nervousness about losing the final in Umag will be an extra motivation to try to do well in Paris, trying hard to bring home at least a medal.
