José Mourinho has never hesitated to consider Jorge Costa as one of the best captains he ever had, providing a concrete example, reported by O’Jogo on the day of the passing of the former Porto central defender, who was cut down by a heart problem.

“One day we were losing 1-0 to Belenenses,” the coach recounted. “At halftime, I was going into the locker room furious, as everyone understood. Jorge Costa came to me and told me to wait two minutes outside. He went into the locker room, closed the door and did the dirty work for me. You could hear him grooming the team.”

“Then he opened the door and said, ‘Now you lead us.’ He did exactly what I would have done. We won 1-3. He was a central defender, he never scored, and in that game he scored two goals,” the Special One added.

With “Bicho,” as Jorge Costa was nicknamed, on the field, Mourinho led Porto to win two consecutive championships and win the UEFA Cup and the Champions League between 2003 and 2004.
