Mattia Bellucci qualified for the second round of the US after Chinese tennis player Juncheng Shang withdrew in the fourth set of the tournament’s first-round match at Flushing Meadows.

After winning the first set on tie-break, the Lombard tennis player suffered the Chinese player’s comeback in the second, with Shang winning 6-1, then regained his coolness and lucidity by winning the third 6-3. In the fourth, with Bellucci leading 3-0, the Beijing-born player raised the white flag due to a leg injury.

In contrast, Elisabetta Cocciaretto exited the women’s draw, beaten in two sets by Putintseva with scores of 6-4, 7-6. In the second round, the Kazakh tennis player will face Anna Kalinskaya.
