When Lorenzo Sonego plays in Beijing: his previous record with Alexander Zverev

Lorenzo Sonego is ready to take the court at the ATP 500 in Beijing, a tournament that attracts some of the best players on the circuit every year. For the Turin native, the draw has not been particularly benevolent: in fact, Alexander Zverev, world number 3 and among the main candidates for the final victory, awaits him in the first round.
The challenge is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, on the Olympic Green Tennis Centre’s central court, it will be the fifth match starting at 05:00 on Capital Group Diamond, but the fourth will not start before 13:00.
The confrontation between the two already has a little history behind it, although the numbers do not smile on the Italian. In fact, there are five previous matches, and on all occasions it was Zverev who prevailed. The last meeting is still fresh in the memory: in Halle, last June, Sonego had deceived by leading by winning the first set 6-3, but then yielding to the German’s return, who won 6-4 7-6 at the end of a battle that lasted more than two hours. A result that nevertheless tells of a balanced match, in which Sonego showed he could compete almost on equal terms with an opponent of superior caliber.
Previously, the two had faced each other again in Halle, in 2024, with another victory by the German in two sets, and in other ATP tournaments in which Zverev always confirmed his superiority. For Sonego, then, the Beijing challenge represents yet another attempt to break a taboo and get his first win against the Tokyo Olympic champion.
