When Jannik Sinner plays in Shanghai: background with Altmaier

Jannik Sinner turns the page right away: the South Tyrolean tennis player after his victory in Beijing shifts his focus to the Shanghai Masters 1000, where he defends the title he won last season. His lifelong rival Carlos Alcaraz will not be there, but the path in the Chinese tournament is definitely challenging for the Blue, who could face Novak Djokovic in a possible semifinal.
The four-time Slam champion will make his debut in the second round and will face German Daniel Almaier, who beat Tristan Schoolkate without any particular problems in the first round. The match between the two is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4; Sinner will have an extra day to rest from his Beijing exertions and to adjust to the Shanghai courts. The’time of the match has not yet been finalized.
Sinner and Altmaier have faced each other twice on the ATP circuit: the result is one win on each side. The Azure won at the 2022 US Open, while the German won the last precedent at Roland Garros 2023. Both matches ended in the fifth set.
Sinner at a press conference in Shanghai had this to say about his expectations: “The conditions are definitely different than in Beijing, so I only have one practice session to prepare, but we will see. It will be a very, very difficult and tough challenge. You never know what will happen, we will see”.
