Foil, World Cup restarts in Majorca with 24 Azzurri

In the collegiate retreat underway at the CONI Olympic Preparation Center in Tirrenia, the Italian national women’s and men’s foil teams are working ahead of their season debut in the World Cup, scheduled for Nov. 6-9 in Palma de Mallorca. In Spain, 24 Italian athletes will be involved in the first event of the 2025-2026 world circuit for the specialty. Among those summoned and authorized, Technical Commissioner Simone Vanni has selected 12 foilists and 12 fencers who will participate in the individual competitions, which will be followed on the last day by the team events.
The calendar in the Balearic Islands will be opened on Thursday, November 6, by the group stage and qualifying draw for the women’s competition, while Friday, November 7, will be the turn of the men’s preliminaries, the first two days reserved for athletes not included in the top 16 of the world rankings who will instead already be admitted by right to the main draw. Saturday, November 8 will be the highlight of both the women’s and men’s individual trials for the awarding of the first medals of the new season, while Sunday, November 9, the two team competitions will be held.
Among the women, Italian national team members Martina Favaretto (No. 2 in the world), Anna Cristino (4), Arianna Errigo (6), Martina Batini (7), Elena Tangherlini (14), Martina Sinigaglia (17), Alice Volpi (24), Francesca Palumbo (25), Irene Bertini (27), Carlotta Ferrari (42), Aurora Grandis (53) and Camilla Mancini (72) will represent the Tricolor.
Among the men, on the other hand, Tommaso Marini (No. 3 in the ranking), Guillaume Bianchi (4), Filippo Macchi (6), Alessio Foconi (12), Davide Filippi (20), Giulio Lombardi (30), Tommaso Martini (35), Edoardo Luperi (50), Damiano Di Veroli (56), Alessio Di Tommaso (83), Lorenzo Nista (88) and Damiano Rosatelli (91) will be on the platform.
For the team competitions on Nov. 9, CT Simone Vanni has indicated five names for each formation, from which the foursomes will then be chosen: in the women’s team, Martina Batini, Anna Cristino, Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto and Alice Volpi are being called for Italy; while in the men’s team Tommaso Marini, Guillaume Bianchi, Filippo Macchi, Alessio Foconi and Davide Filippi have been selected.
In Palma de Mallorca, with the Weapons Manager, masters Fabio Galli, Alessandro Puccini and Marco Ramacci, supported by physiotherapists Matteo Scodro and Stefano Vandini, will make up the blue staff.
In these days, in the collegial gathering at the Olympic Preparation Center in Tirrenia, the men’s and women’s national foil teams were also engaged in a functional evaluation session. The activity, coordinated by experts from CONI’s Institute of Sports Medicine and Science in collaboration with the technical direction and staff of the Italian Fencing Federation, included a series of tests aimed at monitoring the physical state of the Azzurri through neuromuscular tests. The data collected will be used by the federal staff to optimize workloads, prevent injuries and better plan the competitive season. The two-day test is part of the teams’ preparation strategy for upcoming international commitments, with the aim of integrating the physical component with the technical-tactical one to the maximum.
