Lazio market: Mario Gila increasingly central, but renewal is not a given

Lazio soccer market: Mario Gila is carving out year after year an increasingly central role in the Biancocelesti balance. So much so that, despite a contract that is not yet expiring, the Spaniard himself has already expressly admitted that he is ready to renegotiate its extension. And the club intends to move in the same direction.

Titled in his Lazio’s victory over Juventus, Gila has so far been employed by Maurizio Sarri in all of the biancocelesti’s engagements in the league. And, just after the success over the Old Lady, the former Real Madrid man had told the press: “I am happy here, so I will think about my renewal. I have a contract that expires in 2027, so it&#8217s still some time away. I will also discuss it with my attorneys, since the issue also concerns them”.

Now the ball is in Lazio&#8217s court, which seems intent on finding Gila an agreement for renewal by winter. In particular, the aim is to begin negotiations with the player between December and January, when then the soccer market will be reopened for mid-season negotiations. The real problem stems from the fact that the biancocelesti cannot currently make new signings, a circumstance that limits their room for maneuver even when renewing players currently in the squad.

The current impression, in fact, is that of a contract extension proposal that would not, however, include a pay raise for Gila. In other words, the Spaniard is expected to say yes to Lazio on the same terms he accepted in 2022, a month away from turning 22 and when he boasted only two appearances in the top flight with the Real Madrid jersey. Clearly, he has become a different player in the meantime, and it is precisely this that could be the main knot that the biancoceleste management is called upon to untie.
