The Olympic Truce Resolution was adopted by the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly – UNGA) in New York. The resolution calls for the observance of the Olympic Truce for the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and Milan Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee President and IOC member Giovanni Malagò welcomed the adoption of the resolution by consensus, speaking during the General Assembly.

Presenting the resolution on behalf of Italy, Giovanni Malagò, President of the Milan Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee, said, “The draft resolution submitted to you today recalls the role of sport in inspiring individuals and communities to uphold core [Olympic] values. It also recognizes that the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a unifying event that will enhance the power of sport. As Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, I know we have a unique chance and opportunity to promote the Olympic Truce and build a climate of peace”.

Malagò also reminded UN member states of the central message of Milan Cortina 2026: Harmony. “It is a message and a principle deeply rooted in Italian culture and history – he noted. Renaissance artists, writers and philosophers such as Michelangelo, Leonardo and Lorenzo de’ Medici promoted universal themes of beauty, reason and harmony. By encouraging culture and dialogue instead of dogma, they laid the foundations of modern diplomacy and changed the perspective, putting human beings, their dignity and respect at the center. These principles underlie this great institution and echo the precious Olympic commitment to universality”.
