Davis Cup, Filippo Volandri reveals a backstory on Jannik Sinner

Absent physically, very close with his head, heart and some advice: Jannik Sinner, who had decided d’in agreement with the staff of the Italian team not to take part in the Davis Cup Final Eight in order to better schedule the vacations and the subsequent preparation for 2026, nevertheless wanted to participate even from afar in the feat of the boys captained by Filippo Volandri, who gave the Italian colors the third consecutive Davis, fourth overall.

Volandri himself, speaking during the Radio 1 Rai broadcast ‘Un giorno da pecora’, revealed that he has always been in touch with the South Tyrolean outfielder: “He complimented me in the group chat that we have in Davis – he said -, plus he wrote me every day, privately, giving me some advice”.

“In particular – explained the Italian captain, on his third Salad Bowl – he told me to keep doing as I have always done, keeping the group together and relying on the players”. Volandri then did not hide his’ambition for a historic poker: “We would love to, it will still be played in Italy and it would be nice to succeed”.

With its success at the Super Tennis Arena in Bologna Fiere, Italy is the first nation to win the Davis Cup three consecutive times since the new format has been active (2019). In fact, to find the previous consecutive tic-tac-toe one has to go all the way back to 1971, when the United States replicated the success of 1969 and 1970, then made poker in 1972: at the time it was played under the old itinerant formula.
