First warm-up statements from Jannik Sinner after the clear victory over host James Duckworth that earned him passage to the third round of the Australian Open: “Every match is very difficult so I am very happy to have won. I served very well and I am pleased with my performance. I know Duckworth has had a lot of surgeries and it is good to see him back on the court at this level, I wish him the best of luck for the rest of the season. Thanks also to the audience: I know you are Australians like my opponent, but you were very fair”.

“I feel really good right now and that also depends on how the match goes and how much I am on the court in an official match, based on that we decide what to do in the gym the next day. I am happy with the work we have done: my head and body are fine. There is no better way to start the season in a tournament that is very special to me. We know how it went last year, let&#8217s see what can happen this time” added the world number two.

Sinner, however, is not satisfied: “On the short ball with the backhand I have to work again, many times it doesn&#8217t reach the net. I will work with Simone Vagnozzi, who has great hands, even though he lost right away at the Million Dollar 1 Point Slam – he joked recalling last week&#8217s performance. I am happy with where I am, but as always we try to push and get more. The best short ball? Definitely Alcaraz’s, but there are many talents, including my first-round opponent Gaston”.

His next rival will be US player Eliot Spizzirri: “I&#8217ve been watching him, even last year. I will find a player who is very aggressive and serves very well. I also watched the match today on the side courts, in a situation with a lot of wind. I don&#8217t know him that well, we have never played against each other, however, we will prepare as best as we can”.
