The format that will award the ice hockey scudetto changes.

In light of the sanitary evolution found in recent days, which sees a strong growth of Covid-19 infections, and the presence of a number of “positive” players within the teams waiting to participate in the semifinals of the IHL- Serie A of ice hockey, the Italian Ice Sports Federation, in common agreement with the Italian Ice Hockey League, has decided to change the dates and mechanism for the awarding of the 2021-2022 title of Champion of Italy. “The objective,” explain FISG President Andrea Gios, Hockey Councilor Tommaso Teofoli and LIHG President Marcello Cobelli, “is first and foremost to protect the health of athletes, coaches and staff as much as possible, but also to ensure that the decisive phase for the awarding of the Scudetto takes place as smoothly and correctly as possible.

As a result, the semifinals between Migross Supermarkets Asiago Hockey and SG Cortina Hafro, on the one hand, and Rittner Buam versus HC Gherdeina on the other, have been canceled. Game 1 was scheduled for Wednesday, January 12, Game 2 the following day and the eventual Game 3 on Saturday, January 15.

FISG and LIHG have also decided to postpone the final phase of the IHL – Serie A championship to the period between February 8 and 12 (during the so-called Olympic break), changing the format for awarding the 2021-2022 Italian Champion title. The Scudetto, in fact, will be awarded at the end of a Round Robin (Italian round) in which the best 4 teams ranked at the end of the regular season will participate: these are, as known, Asiago (1st), Rittner Buam (2nd), Gherdeina (3rd) and Cortina (4th).

Each lineup will play three matches facing all the opponents (the first two ranked will be entitled to play two out of three matches at home), and at the end of the round the best ranked team will be able to boast the title of Champion of Italy (88th edition).

This is the schedule scheduled for the Scudetto Round Robin, with starting times of the matches still to be defined.

February 8: Asiago – Cortina, Rittner Buam – Gherdeina
Feb. 10: Gherdeina – Asiago, Rittner Buam – Cortina
Feb. 12: Cortina – Gherdeina, Asiago – Renon
