In Abu Dhabi Verstappen passed Hamilton on the last lap to win the title

The finale of the Abu Dhabi GP 2021 will remain in history because of Max Verstappen’s decisive last-lap overtaking of Lewis Hamilton for the title. But also because of the chaos at the restart after the Safety Car, which later led to the removal of Michael Masi as race director.

Now after a few months even Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner has admitted Masi’s mistake: “He made a mistake because he didn’t allow all the lapped drivers to split up,” Horner told The Cambridge Union. “That was his only mistake.

“Masi made many decisions to our disadvantage last year, such as the yellow flag in Qatar qualifying or the Silverstone incident with Lewis,” Horner added, however. After Abu Dhabi I felt sorry for him: he should have had more support. He was in a difficult position.”
