Wimbledon, two surprise eliminations in women’s draw
World number one Swiatek falls, Coco Gauff also beaten
Iga Swiatek falls at Wimbledon: the world number one, who was coming off a 37-match winning streak on the circuit, was narrowly defeated in the round of 16 at the London Slam, bowed out in two sets by Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-2.
The Pole, clearly struggling on grass, was never able to counter her rival’s game and succumbed decisively.
The other surprise of the day was the elimination of U.S. Coco Gauff, beaten by Anisimova in three sets with the scores of 7-6, 2-6, 1-6. The 18-year-old world number 12 was rematched by her compatriot, two years her senior, and is forced to give up her dream for this year.
