Italy remains in the running

After the heavy knockout against France, Italy erases the zero from the points column in the standings in Group D of the Women’s European Championships by drawing 1-1 against Iceland on Day 2.

Match actually started very badly for coach Milena Bertolini’s Azzurre, trailing after not even three minutes due to the goal scored by Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir. Unlike what happened against the transalpine women, however, the Italian girls did not break down and ground their game, although they were unable to violate the opponent’s goal until halftime.

After the break, Bonansea, Girelli and Bartoli entered in place of Caruso, Piemonte and Gama: the game became more and more fluid and the Azzurri equalized with Valentina Bergamaschi, good at materializing a beautiful choral action.

In the last half hour, fatigue prevented both teams from sinking the blow, and the 1-1 score became the final one at the triple whistle. The Azzurre will thus play for qualification on the last day, against Belgium.
