Matteo Berrettini revisits his worst nightmare
The words of Matteo Berrettini
Matteo Berrettini cannot forget his forfeit at Wimbledon, due to Covid: “It was crazy, also because my team was trying not to look too sad. I stood isolated in my room, hoping to be negative in time for Tuesday, when I would play. At one point we thought we were on a practical joke, or that someone or something was cursing us.”
“I didn’t watch the tournament except toward the end. I honestly couldn’t watch it,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I’m not a big tennis fan when I’m not playing it. I threw myself into movies and series, I finished Peaky Blinders. I admit I was not too sociable with those who tried to call or write me in those days.”
“I tried to look on the bright side. Despite the sadness and disappointment, I was coming from two weeks where I couldn’t have asked for better. I came back after my hand surgery and managed to win two tournaments. So, in the end, I tried to come back from London with the positive memory of winning at Queen’s and not with the bitterness of not playing Wimbledon,” he concluded.
