Why is he always so strict with himself? Charles Leclerc explains
His harsh self-criticisms have often astonished, but they have an explanation.
Charles Leclerc has decided to explain why he is often so ruthless with himself, in Team Radio with Ferrari as well as in interviews on the sidelines of qualifying and Grand Prix. And to do so he chose the microphones of the ‘BBC,’ with whom he was lapidary: “Yes, I admit my mistakes. And I do so because, in all honesty, I don’t understand why I should deny them. Making excuses seems like a waste of time to me, and I don’t like wasting time. Plus this does not allow you to overcome what you do wrong.”
“It is true that I am very hard on myself,” Leclerc admitted, “but I always want to come to terms with my mistakes. I have a harder time accepting my own than when maybe it’s the team that is wrong. But in Ferrari of course we are a team, and so we all win and lose together.”
So Ferrari’s Monegasque explained how he metabolizes his mistakes. “I try to analyze what went wrong, first of all on a mental level. I want to understand why I forced the limit at that moment. Because talking is easy, understanding less so. But I think this approach of mine is one of my strengths. A mental coach? No, he cannot help with error analysis. I have been working on this aspect on my own,” Leclerc revealed.
