Toto Wolff is convinced that this is just a transitional season for Mercedes: “If three months ago you won a world title and now you are so far behind those competing for victories, it means that there is something that didn’t work.”

“It’s a roller-coaster season. In qualifying we are very far from pole position generally, except then we are much more competitive in the race. We have been on the podium practically every Sunday.”

“Ferrari and Red Bull have done a better job than we have, but it’s when you lose that you learn the most important and valuable lessons,” he reiterated. “As a team we never stand still because in F1 when you think you’ve won you fall inexorably. Every year we learn something to correct and improve the stable in a time frame that also looks five or 10 years into the future so I’m sure this season will come in handy in the next ones.”
