Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, two heavy slaps: “Hard to digest”
North America has certainly not smiled so far on Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini: Turin Finals far away
Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini looking for redemption after failures came from their first two North American tournaments. The South Tyrolean tennis player went out in the round of 16 in both Canada and Cincinnati, not confirming the growth he showed in Umag and disappointing on his favorite surface.
The Italian, ranked 13th in the Atp rankings, commented on the loss to Auger-Aliassime as follows, “It’s a tough defeat to digest even though overall I think I played well. I had two match points but I couldn’t close it when I had to. In the tie break he played well so as in the beginning of the third set where he started better than me.”
Sinner will train without playing ahead of the Us Open, where he is called to redemption along with fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini. The Roman’s season has been up and down: back to play after a three-month stop due to injury, Berrettini had thrilled by winning two tournaments on his return, then came the Wimbledon stop for Covid and the defeat in the Swiss Open final. Then came the two first-round knockouts in a row in Canada and Cincinnati that confirmed the heavy delay in the Race to the Finals in Turin.
