Vincenzo Nibali speaks out on the World Cup hypothesis.
The decision on the World Cup is not yet final
Friday, August 19, is an important day for Vincenzo Nibali: it is the date on which the Shark begins his last career grand tour, the Vuelta a España, which kicks off just Friday outside the border with a team time trial in Utrecht, Netherlands.
With ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport,’ Nibali spoke not only about specific ambitions related to the Vuelta (“I would like to win a stage,” he said), but also commented on the possibility of participating in the World Championships in Wollongong, without definitively closing the door on coach Bennati but speaking rather plainly: “I am in contact with the technical commissioner,” he explained, “however, I have more my head on the Lombardia, I tell the truth.
The Tour of Lombardy, which Nibali has won twice (2015 and 2017) will be the last professional race for the Strait champion: “I evaluated the proposal of Ivan Basso and Eolo-Kometa, we talked about it, but it was not in my heart to take a step back from the decision made. The last road race will be Lombardia, on October 8.”
