Gianmarco Tamberi, shock admission comes in.
Gimbo also spoke about the difficult relationship with his daddy-coach.
Protagonist of a race that gave him the second laurel of his career at the European championships level – to which must be added another gold and silver won at the European Indoor Championships – Gianmarco Tamberi told his story to the microphones of La Gazzetta dello Sport in an exclusive interview. Never trivial, always willing to tell even the most ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of his private life, Gimbo made no secret of having gone through some very difficult moments. From which, however, he emerged successfully.
“Several times I felt lost, not knowing what to chase after a fire that had been burning for five years was extinguished. Then the desire to hit other goals prevailed. The weight of certain sacrifices inevitably creates tension. It is investing in oneself, that is what stimulates me most. To achieve results, however, going through that road is inevitable,” the Civitanova Marche native began.
“The relationship with my father? The balance was already quite unstable before Tokyo. But up to there the idea of a common goal held us together, and we repaired the cracks. However, this season, after 13 years, we both felt the need to detach. I think that can happen, especially if the relationship is also father-son. What will happen now? I don’t know: chasing first the World Cup and then the European Championships, I didn’t want to waste a minute thinking about something that would distract me. There will be the right time to discuss it,” he continued.
On the upcoming marriage to his Chiara, Tamberi was clear: “Without athletics I would have married earlier, maybe I would have children. So many choices have been conditioned and it’s a burden for me. And much bigger for Chiara. But it’s always been clear between us. It would be wonderful to be a dad-athlete, but it’s too early to talk about it,” he concluded.
