U.S. Open, official forfeit of a star player
Sascha Zverev confirmed forfeit due to ankle problems
Alexander ‘Sascha’ Zverev will not be at the starting ribbons of the Us Open, whose men’s and women’s main draw matches will kick off on Monday, August 29.
The decision, now official, had actually been in the air for some time, given the aftermath of the nasty injury the German athlete sustained in the match he played against Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros. Despite the work of the medical staff that followed Zverev, the tearing of three ligaments in his ankle proved too tough an obstacle to overcome: his return to the court, therefore, is to be postponed until a later date.
Taking Zverev’s place in the main draw will be Stefan Kozlov, an American athlete who, after missing the main draw several times via qualifying, will get his chance for the first time in his career.
