ATP Winston-Salem, Lorenzo Sonego breaks curse
Finally a win for the world’s No. 63 ranking
After so many untimely exits in previous tournaments-from the Swedish Open to Cincinnati, via the Swiss Open and the Kitzbühel tournament-Lorenzo Sonego breaks the curse by winning his first match on the concrete of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the scene of the tournament entered in the ATP 250 category.
In fact, the Italian defeated with a score of 7-5 6-1 the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, suffering not a little in the first set but then ramping up in the second partial. Sonego risked to lose the first set, having gone down 4-5 with the opponent ready to close the partial with his own service, but thanks to a reaction of pride he strung three consecutive games closing in 7-5; mel second set the Piedmontese immediately flew on 5-0, not conceding anything more to the South American and filing the match with an eloquent 6-1. In the next round Sonego will face U.S. Maxime Cressy, world number 34.
