Vuelta 2022, historic record for Evenepoel
Evenepoel’s historic record
Remco Evenepoel, at the end of stage six, became the youngest cyclist in 34 years to lead the Vuelta a España general classification after delivering a stunning performance in prohibitive conditions at the first uphill finish.
Pico Jano, a Cantabrian mountain that made its first appearance in Spain’s biggest stage race, not only ignited the fight for the general classification, but will now forever be in the 22-year-old Belgian’s memory. The 12.6-kilometer climb ended up widening the gaps between riders vying for the general classification and also changing, for the fifth time in as many days, the leader in the red jersey.
The class of 2000 from the Quick Step Alpha Vinyl Team, will now have to fend off pursuers, including the fierce favorites of the Iberian public, Enric Mas of the Moviestar team and Juan Ayuso of the UAE Emirates Team.
