Gianmarco Pozzecco displaces everyone and is already talking goodbye
The words of Gianmarco Pozzecco
Long interview in Sportweek ahead of Eurobasket for Gianmarco Pozzecco, in his usual style: “I’m about to turn 50 but cerebrally I’m 18. So let’s say I just reached maturity.”
“One question I’ve always been asked is: when did you start playing basketball? And I: and you, when did you start walking? To say that I don’t remember a Gianmarco without basketball. And to think that because of my physical conformation, I was not suited for this sport. So, unlike the predestined, I never had special expectations, I always played for fun without taking myself too seriously, also because I was lucky enough to start my professional career very late. In short, I never made budgets because I did not have any particular goals whose achievement needed to be verified.”
“I don’t think I will coach much longer,” he later revealed, “I don’t have the energy to do it for a long time. And then the national team was precisely the highest aspiration, and I achieved it relatively quickly. I don’t know how many coaches have the same respect as I do for Italian players-I am convinced that they can play against anyone. Second, I was the only player in Italy who was twice undeservedly excluded from the national team, in ’99 and 2003. I was stronger than those summoned in my place, but less alienable and more uncomfortable. Suffering those two exclusions means that I now live my role with even greater responsibility.”
Filling in on the European Championship: “Luck will count a lot, catching the right cross with a less strong opponent. The minimum goal is to create enthusiasm, especially playing at home. People sense when you play with passion and sharing.”
