Italian national team player Achille Polonara, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the FIBA Eurobasket 2022 fan zone, spoke about the path ahead for Gianmarco Pozzecco’s men, who will begin their adventure on the evening of Sept. 2, at the Assago Forum: “Most of us last year were in Tokyo, where we showed we could play with everyone. We have to approach game after game at this European as if they were so many finals. We are not favorites for sure. But in terms of willpower and will to win, yes we are among the favorites. We also hope for the support of the public. In the first phase it can be a plus point for us.”

“We are looking forward to the start, we have been training together for a long time. Between trainings, friendly and qualifying matches we have had a good run,” continued the former Fenerbache player, who is eager to play.

Finally, a comment on the experiences abroad, which have served the former Varese, now at Anadolu Efes, very well: “Playing abroad gives you more responsibility. You get to know a new league, new players. You are considered … as a foreigner. In Italy, on the other hand, if you make a mistake as an Italian ‘you are excused.’ Playing abroad on the one hand puts you under pressure but on the other hand it makes you grow a lot, both as a player and as a person.”
